Pioneer AO6: Differences between OEM & Retail

Postby whoster69 on Wed Jun 25, 2003 6:54 pm

I'm thinking about buying this drive and unfortunately, I'm under a time constraint to get one soon (next day or two). I'm curious to see what the differences are in the United States between the OEM and the Retail versions of this drive. Does anyone know?

I've heard the OEM comes with software, but I'm not sure if it's as good as the software that comes with the retail version. The price difference is about $70 (OEM for around $259 and retail for around $329).

Also if anyone gets some reviews of this drive please post them.

I will post my experiences/info as I find it under this topic.

Thanks.

OEM is usually just the drive. No box, no software, no manual. If you're lucky, the store selling it might throw in the manual and software. And yeah, you might not get the same software offered in the retail package.

Keep in mind that with an OEM drive, you might not be able to get tech support for your drive or even RMA it if it breaks.

Sometimes when ordering OEM Pioneer DVR-105 from supplier, they might ship out bare-drive with manual + software. But this is not always the case, OEM DVR-105 might come in a big box containing the drive with manual + software.

LiveWarehouse has it for only $229 (free shipping), but only the bare drive:

Pioneer DVR-106 Review

Software packages included in the retail DVR-A06 box and the Pioneer warranty are worth more than the price difference. :D
