Phillips DVDR985 set-top DVD+RW recorder - Any experiences?

Postby BoGMan1a on Sun May 25, 2003 1:27 am

I saw this on clearance at my local Cicuit City ($344) and picked it up for myself. Now that I am home, I am wondering whether to pop it open or not. The reason I am holding back is that I am reading really mixed reviews on the web about it. I am wondering if anyone in the forums has had any personal experiences with this model? I just ask because I trust this forum more (due to burning experience here) than just a regular consumer review. Thanks in advance :D , and I hope that I posted in the appropriate forum (I was torn between here and General Hardware) :-? .

P.S. I plan to use it as a VCR(DVD+RW) mostly with easier computer access than a TIVO type recorder and also for transferring Digital 8 tapes to DVD(+R).

I hooked it up, I recorded a couple of DVD+RW discs, I took it back! I was not really impressed :-? with the quality of it as a VCR type device, maybe it was my cable hook-up, and I just couldn't justify it to myself after that. I guess I will look into a TIVO/ReplayTV type device (I am kind of looking forward to dropping a huge second HD in, them being so cheap lately) and just move on using my Sony 500ax as my burner. :P
