An Odd Question for ya

Postby j0ly on Fri Feb 07, 2003 3:38 am

I have 2 burners, a yamaha 48x and a liton 52x.... when doing multiple burner burns in nero it limits my burn speed to 16x.... it says in the log of the burn

YAMAHA CRW-F1E
Can only wrtie at 16x instead of 44x to current disc.

Ive made sure that the disks are 44x compatible, and also tryed turning the smartburn off on both drives.... anybody have any suggestions... cause it sucks waiting for these disks to come off at 16x when there is way more potental for fasts burns... thanks

does the Yamaha burn these discs at 44x when you try to burn on it alone?

ok.
i'll also assume the Lite-On burns these CDs at 52x.

what's the IDE setup?

can you post a Nero log?

both burners are master on there own seperate chanels... ide 0 and ide 1
and a PIONEER DVD-ROM on ide1 id 1
hd's are off a 133 promise card...

The liteon does burn fine at 52x, and the Yamaha fine at 48x.....

sorry, i'm stumped!

did you try other media?
i gather you're burning an image file (Cue/Bin ?)
did you try a "regular" ISO data CD?

I know you said that you can burn the Princo at 44x (48x = typo) on the Yamaha when burning by itself and that you tried turning off the optimum write-speed control, but it is suspicious that the limitation to 16x occurs immediately after the disc is identified and, presumably, the optimum write-speed decision is made. So, I would agree with dodecahedron that you at least ought to try a couple other brands of media. As always, Fuji/TY media is a good candidate for high-quality media with which to test.

However, I wonder if what is really going on here is that when burning to multiple burners, Nero needs to set the burn speed to a specific value, rather than letting each drive choose its own value. This would make sense, as Nero would probably want to send the same data to both drives at the same time and at a known rate.

Unfortunately, in F1 drives with older firmware, the maximum burn speed that can be manually set is 16x. :( To burn faster you most choose "max speed" which causes Yamaha's OWSC to set the speed independently of the burning software. As postulated above, this may be unacceptable to Nero when doing a burn to multiple drives simultaneously.

Is there any way around this? You might try flashing your Yamaha to the latest firmware, version 1.0f, which allows you to manually specify burn speeds of 24x and 32x (when you disable OWSC):

http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product ... fw-10.html

After you have installed the new firmware, turn off OWSC on the Yamaha and manually set both its burn speed and the LiteOn's burn speed to 32x before starting the burn. This may allow you to burn to both drives in parallel at 32x which, while probably not the performance you were hoping for, is still a little bit faster than burning discs serially at 52x. There is a chance that even this won't work though, if Nero doesn't distinguish between the firmware versions when setting up a burn to multiple drives. It probably does, but on the other hand Nero might be playing it conservatively and, for maximum compatibility with all firmware versions, limiting all Yamaha F1’s used in multiple-drive burns to the 16x manual speed common denominator.

By the way, your setup is good for doing burns to multiple drives simultaneously. You have DMA enabled on everything, and each drive is on its own IDE channel. Having each drive on a separate IDE channel is the recommended configuration when both are being used simultaneously.

Right on the money guys.....

Upgraded the firmware, and disabled the media auto detect and that did it!!!

Now burning at 44x on both drives... Thanks a bunch guys.... If you lived near me id bring a case of beer over!!!

Good deal! Glad to hear you are burning at speed now. I think you will have a little trouble with the beer though, since dodecahedron lives in Israel and I live in the United States... but thanks anyway. :)

Actually, dodecahedron, you aren't giving yourself enough credit here. To be honest, I wasn't going to look at this problem, since I have no personal experience burning to multiple drives simultaneously. But after you decided to give it the old college try and asked j0ly to post the Nero log, I thought I would at least take a look. If you hadn't engaged j0ly, I never would have gotten involved. And even neglecting your contribution in that area, you asked some good questions and made some reasonable suggestions. So don't turn down j0ly's generous offer of beer so quickly!
