Newbe Question???

Postby diselman on Tue Dec 24, 2002 12:52 am

:D
I just discovered this site, been tied up in a deep cave. I have a tdk 24-10-40b. What can be accomplished by changing the firmware. I just bought a cendyne [lite-on] ltr-48125w 2 days ago, before I found this site. Any reason to change the firmware on the Lite-on? You guy's have a bunch of info here, a great site and I'm getting a little wild trying to absorb it all.
Thanks

What is your current firmware? The only benefit would be to "increase media compatibility"

Well my advice is, if it is working fine don't update your firmware. Most of this updates are to support more media, so if your drive is working fine with your media updating is optional. Although I think that drive has a firmware update that enables Mt. Rainier.

I agree with CignaXI, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I have the TDK 24.10.40b as well.

I don't believe that there is a way to make it burn faster by flashing the firmware.

Keep it as is. It's a good reliable burner.

Postby diselman on Wed Dec 25, 2002 10:43 pm

I finally installed and found the firmware. It is vso6. Is there anything to be gained by flashing to vso8 or trying to flash to 52x. From what I have read so far on this site and your advice I'm not concerned sbout the 52x if this performs as it should. I can't get the software to install. I disabled the cdc virtual drive, as I read somewhere. Any ideas?

You cannot flash with 52x firmware. You should update to VS08 though. What software can't you get to install?

I can't install Nero. It can't find it, so I use browse and send it to F:\nero\nero55\nero - burning rom.msi. It tells me the installition source is not available. I have an old copy of nero on C: drive could this be a problem? F: is mu 52x reader only.

I'm guessing you are trying to install it off a CD that came with your burner. It's not an issue of not finding it because you can always download it online at http://www.ahead.de :)

Other than that, on the installation CD you have, there should be an .exe file whether it be setup.exe, nero.exe or something similar. Search for it.

Yes, download the latest version from ahead.de and use the Key for the version that you own.

The firmware version VS06 is typical of 48125W drives made in June 2002 and is only 166kb large, VS08 is 469kb and has much much more media support. I just upgraded to VS08 yesterday and I find my drive is much faster at seeking files than VS06.
