How many people use Alcohol? Post if you do. I rarely use it, but I do like it because it can burn Alcohol images, BlindWrite images, CloneCD images, and of course the mainstream ISO and BIN/CUE.

I use alcohol sometimes, but I would think that would be covered under "The Beer Garden."

How about a Culture Club Fan Club & Boy George Admirers forum?

What do you mean "had?"

I still have it. Doesn't fit. But I still have it.

On a more serious topic. Here's a list of what's going and being added so far. The descriptions are in ().

Merging these with General Software Questions:

CloneCD/DVD
CDRWIN

Adding new to Software:

Sonic (MyDVD, RecordNow, DLA, etc)

Adding under "Other":
DVD Authoring (DVD ripping, copying, reauthoring, etc)
Video (Capturing, Editing, Converting, etc)
Press Releases [just a place to post press releases]

And then a whole new section called "Media". It will contain two sections:
DVD (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM, etc)
CD (CD-R/RW, etc)

You guys can post your media results here. I also thought about adding a section for general media questions. Thoughts?

Anyway, I'm looking for feedback.

I'm just pondering if the above sections will get enough posts to justify them. The thing is, most newcomers will probably go to the current CD-R/CD-RW forum to ask any question relating to drives or media. I do think it's a good idea to have separate forums though, because I am sure more people will post DVD-/+R(W) media results once these drives become more mainstream...which they are starting to. That ought to take some of the load off the general DVD Recordable forum which presently exists. It's amazing how many more posts are in the DVD Recordable forum than the CD-R/RW one! Talk about a huge shift!

Yeah, at least initially, the mods will have to move posts to the correct areas.

If that's too much of a hassle then don't make separate forums for media. Quite honestly, it can go either way. As it currently stands, with people posting hardware and media questions in the same forum, there aren't an overwhelming number of posts. The DVD Recordable forum, for example, is not flooded with new posts. At least not to me, who usually checks the site every day or two.

Yeah, but I've found that its harder to find the info you're looking for. Hopefully it will cut down on the repetitive questions, comments, etc.

Those look like some good changes to me!

I like the idea of having a forum where we can post our results with different drives and media. If you haven't already planned to do this, it would be nice if we could upload pictures of media scans directly to CDRLabs so that they will always be there even if we change web hosts or if our hosting services go down temporarily.

I'll have to talk to Socheat and see if phpBB can do this. If not, we can probably put something together to do this.

Ian- wouldn't it be better to have an "other burning programs" section for CloneCD et al to keep topics (also for Pinnacle Instant DVD, Plextools etc.) separate from questions regarding
- soundcard drivers
- virus scanners
- XP restore points
- focus stealing
and the like?

I take it that NTI stays because of sponsorship or something. Most of the topics look like they're candidates for Press Releases though.

I guess a media section is OK. I pretty well agree with whar TheWizard said here. A lot of questions do relate to both media and drives, though, so the mods may have to be more active. In that case, I hope that you can win TheWizard as a mod for the CD-R(W) media forum.

excellent suggestion, G.
separate forums: one for Other burning apps, another for all non-burning software issues.
these two themes are mixed up with each other as things are now.

as for uploading pics, that would be great. it's really convenient when browsing other forums that you can upload a pic.
however you seriously have to consider the cost factor of hosting all these pics. also, this will (inevitably, and rightly so) encourage more and more people to put up pics. which will translate into higher bandwidth usage -> more cost.

since a large portion of the regulars here frequent CDfreaks, and CDfreaks already has such media scans forums, i think it is worth thinking about if we even want to get into this.

I don't think that forums for specific brands of hardware (Lite-On, Plextor, etc) would be helpful, though. I've seen this type of thing on other web sites, and I never liked it. But, that's just my opinion. :)

I agree that a Linux section would be useful, too, but I'm not sure if everyone would agree with me.

I second his opinion and yeah a couple forums should go.What about a general backup forum for like alcohol 120 and blindwrite?

Ian,
i think the new DVD Authoring and Video Editing forums should be in the Software section of the forums rather than the Other section.

seems more appropriate to me.
DVD Authoring and Video Editing are software issues aren't they? well in some sense at least.

goodie goodie. i'll start a poll (my first ever! :) )
here it is:

as i was writing the Poll, i thought of a new possibility:
a new section, maybe called Tools or some such.

the Software section of the forums would be dedicated to Software/Vendor specific forums (Ahead, Roxio, Sonic etc.)
the Tools section would be for software related themes, such as DVD Authoring and Video Editing. maybe also Media testing like some have suggested (for KProbe & the like).

what do you think?

What!?! No K3b section! I'm outraged! Or at least offended. Or maybe just bored. Or something like that....

If you don't add a K3b section, I'll sick some P.O'd penquins on ya! :D 8)

EDIT:
The media section is a GREAT idea!!!

Don't worry. The CloneCD/DVD and CDRWIN sections will be gone some time next week. I just didn't feel like messing with it before I left for vacation.
