i know there are only some mechanical differences between those drives, but i've ordered the 166 an got the 165 - is it worth it sending it back waiting for weeks to get the 166?

Here's two threads that are of some use to you. However, in the first thread, Ian's initial comments have been removed at the request of Lite-On, so we'll never know what he said about the differences between the two drives.

You know, when companies request that info on their products be removed, I just feel like never buying from them again. Especially after dealing with my 48125W, my friends 40125W, and his Lite-On DVD. So a big Pha-Q to Lite-On.

IIRC the main internal difference was a new servo?

Yeah, there is a new servo in the 166S.

Here are the other differences..

1. Better protection from shattering discs.
2. Quieter operation
3. IDE cable short prevention
4. Disc scratch free design

The 166 is supposed to have a better tray and better dust proofing too
