Liteon XJ-HD165H vs XJ-HD166H

Postby baneonrt on Wed Mar 05, 2003 10:08 pm

Ok, I just recieved my new Liteon DVD drive from Newegg. I though I had ordered the XJ-HD166H but recieved a XJ-HD165H. Now that I double check the item description I see that when you order the retail version either one can come in the box. My question is, what are the actual differences between these drives? Would it be worth it to send it back in favor of the 166?

Thanks for any information

I have the LTD-165H(jlms XJ-HD165H)and it averages 7.5x rips.
I think the differance is 165H reads DVD-RAM and is ATA66.

Thank you, that's what I was looking for.

So, would you think it's worth it to exchange a 165 for a 166. I'm a little peeved that Newegg didn't clearly mark it as such.

165 & 166 Are Nearly Identical

Postby NeilPeart on Thu Mar 06, 2003 7:00 pm

Baneonrt,
I would not worry too much about the 166's improvements over the 165. I owned the 165 briefly (I purchased it before the 166 was announced) until my grandfather needed a DVD-ROM to replace his old Toshiba drive. I gave him my 165 and purchased a 166 for myself; I could not notice any distinctions between the two drives regarding noise, speed, etc. The improvements listed are probably so subtle that only super-sensitive benchmarks would reveal a difference. Don't worry, the 165 is a great drive and my grandpa has encountered no problems (he actually remarked how quiet the drive is, because his old SCSI hard drives dwarf any components with their deafening din). :)
Drives I Own:

Asus S520/A, Plextor UltraPlex 40TSi, Lite-on XJ-HD166S, Pioneer DVD-106S, Toshiba SD-M1712, Plextor PX-R820Ti, Plextor PX-W1210TS, Plextor Premium, Samsung SM-352B, Teac CD-W540E, Yamaha CRW-F1, Plextor PX-708A, Sony DRU-510A
