Is Lite-On going to produce a dvd recordable drive soon?

Postby Misa on Fri Apr 18, 2003 4:28 pm

I read that Lite-On is going to produce dvd recordable drives in the furture acording to text taken from a review of the Sony DRU-500AX DVD±RW Drive at Game PC. Here is a URL to the page:

http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content ... mbo&page=6

The cost of the drive becomes a bigger issue as the well-known OEM Lite-On, is getting ready to release DVD ReWritable drives in the near future, and all signs point to Lite-On supporting the combination DVD±RW format, which Sony has a stranglehold on right now. No doubt if Lite-On puts out a drive with similar capabilities, Sony will be forced to lower prices, but the ReWritable DVD market will truly have a chance to grow. Especially so, if Lite-On can deliver on the rumored $150 price point for DVD±RW.

If this is true any spectulation on when we will see these drives hit the shelves? I have been looking into purchasing a dvd recordable drive and Lite-On would make good Dvd recordables based on my experience with their cdrws.

Last I heard Lite-On was having problems with their parts supplier and were expecting to release a +R writer($150USD?) in Q2 then a -R/+R($300?)in Q3.Looking at the price of the Sony 500 series writer($340) I seriously doubt Lite-On's -R/+R writer will be $150.

I wasn't necessarily thinking that they would meet that price point. :) I was just looking forward to seeing a drive made by Lite-On. Oh well I may end up buying a Sony DRU-500AX depending on any deals/pay check situation in the near future. I was just thinking that it maybe worth the wait to go with a company that I have had more experience with, computer parts wise that is.

According to sources, we probably shouldn't expect LiteOn's LDW-401S DVD+R/RW burner until June at the earliest. I don't know anything about the dual format burner.
