The inventor of the "Blue Light Special" has decided to go HD DVD.

Toshiba spokesperson Jodi Sally said Kmart, which is owned by Sears, would exclusively stock Toshiba HD DVD players in retail stores due to their lower price.

I'm really interested to see how long this will last. I suspect that before Christmas we'll see them begin to sell Blu-Ray players as well. There's just too strong a demand for Blu-Ray to ignore it. However, they *DO* sell the PS3, so it's not like they aren't offering the single most popular HiDef player in the world :P

High-Def Digest contacted Kmart about this story and its not true.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/ ... urple/1137

In a statement released late Thursday, Kmart VP Jonathan Magasanik said the following:

There have been numerous statements in the media today, attributed to Toshiba, indicating exclusive support for the HD DVD format in Kmart stores. These statements are false. Kmart intends to support both the HD DVD and Blu-ray platforms, and has no plans to support either platform exclusively.

Untrue. But you can call it temporary true. Kmart vp is right.

It seems that pricing is the whole thing.
Cheap blu ray standalone means they are going to sell it.
Toshiba seems to have limited exclusivity thanks to there drives currently are only being in the target range.

The ps3 is not counted as a standalone blu ray player but falls in a different categorie of it's own that's while it's still out there.
Trying to make something "foolproof" only forces nature to make a better fool.
