How good Maxell DVD+R/-R Media??

Postby Nisa on Sun Aug 10, 2003 9:54 pm

Hi Folks;
I am planning to buy Maxwell DVD+R media from Office Depot this week. Buy two 5 packs get one free!
I wonder how good this media comparing to others?

Also is Memorex Dual format DVD burner, please click the for more info, Pioneer drive or not. Does anyone have any idea?? According to pictures on the box, it seems it is Pioneer's new dual format drive.

Thanks in advance.

I have used both Maxell + and - (not a lot though - a few 5 packs of -R
and one 10 pack of +R).
They have worked fine for me.

To be honest, the only DVD media I have EVER had any real problems with (not including some early DRU-500A issues BEFORE the initial firmware update), was KHypermedia, and even then it depended on the batch:
The 5 packs with jewel cases and the 25 pack spindles (newer generation of CMC) worked well.
The 10 pack spindle was terrible.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

Memorex 4x DVD+Rs are on sale for a lot cheaper than Maxells.
Last week CompUSA had a spindle of 10 Memorex 4x DVD+R for $14.39 (1.44/DVD) and this week BestBuy has a spindle of 25 Memorex 4x DVD+R for $35 ($1.40/DVD).

I know nothing about DVD+-R/+-RW disks yet, just got my DVR-A06U so i,m a noobe.
But Memorex CDR/CDRW disks IMO suck. I hate them so much I would not take them if given to me. There CDR's are not read well by some CDroms and there CDRW's should be called CDR's, the rewritability sucks compaired to any other brand I have tried. Just my 2 cents.

Since you admit that you are a newbie with DVD media, I suggest that you read the following link, before assuming anything:

For the cd media it depended on the Memorex media you bought. I had a 100 spindle of it that was TY and burned fine at up to 40x with my burner.
Most of the newer Memorex stuff has been whatever they got the best deal on however so it pays to see where it was made. I have some Memorex dvr-rw media and it's 1x only but it had worked OK so far but I don't use it for critical stuff, just testing and things.

As far as Maxell +R 4x media goes, I just bought a 5 pack from futureshop to try out. (Not as good a deal as the Memorex sale that was on last week, and turned out to be the EXACT same media) It, like the Memorex 4x +R, is made by Ricoh and the media code is RICOHJPN01. This is very good media and will burn at 8x in the new 8x Plextor drives!
