How can you tell what make the CD's and DVD's are?

Postby DeeJay on Sat Sep 20, 2003 4:49 pm

I know that certain media are marketed under various names. But in order to know if my drive is comaptible with them I'd like to know who the manufacturer is. How can I find out?

I used nero infotool but the entries under the advanced section are not always the same. With an unused DVD is says "Medium info: 3,7GB available" and with a burned disc is says: "disc size 12cm".

And when i insert my philips 12x CDRW it says "CMC magnetics 12x CDRW" which is what I want to know. However, with the same CDRW in my liteon DVD player it says: "medium info: n/a". I dont get it.

Read-Only drives (such as your DVD-ROM) can't read manufacturer information. You need a recorder to do that.

Use DVD Info Pro:

EDIT: Just CDRecorder's Post, didn't realize you only had a reader, you will need a writer.

I also have a writer. I just said that I didnt understand that infotool reported different information in the burner and the player.

I own the Liteon 401S myself and i am currently testing the plaxtor PX-708A. I work in a computershop so I have the liberty to try some hardware before buying :D

It seems that the Datawrite DVD+R 2,4x discs are really Ricoh JPRN00 dics. The Fortis DVD+RW are optodisc op1 media.

My liteon DVD player does seem to be able to read the manufacturer data just fine.

It isnt mine yet.
But I like it. It looks a lot better than my old plextor 48x cd burner. It has a more luxury feel to it. And I like the way the tray opens. It is a lot more silent than my liteon burner. But it is also twice as expensive. So I think I'll wait untill the 8x media start appearing. The 708A is unable to write the datawrites over 2,4x so there is no advantage there. to my surprise the Liteon 401S does have that option. But the discs burned at 4x had some errors on it so I'll stick to 2,4 for now..
