In House Review - Plextor PX-504A DVD+R/RW

Postby Ian on Fri Mar 21, 2003 9:10 am

CDRLabs has taken one of the first looks at Plextor's new DVD+R/RW drive, the PX-504A. This highly anticipated DVD writer is not only a first for Plextor, it's also one of the first drives to support 4x DVD+R and 2.4x DVD+RW writing speeds. Of course Plextor hasn't stopped there. They've also included support for their PoweRec technology, buffer underrun protection and lossless linking technology. In this review we take a look at some of the features found on Plextor's new DVD writer and then see how it performs. Does the PX-504A deliver the level of performance we've come to expect from Plextor's CD writers? You'll have to check out the review to find out.

:( 16x CD-R

i must say that surprises me. but it is built around that NEC DVD burner. which I personally am not a fan of.

Oh ya find me cheap 4x +R and maybe this drive would be nice in one way

Ian,

How many different brands of DVD+RW discs did you try and did you try multiple erasures? Some of us with Dell branded ND1100A's have been having a hard time with +RW erasures. Basically, we can write to blank +R and +RW discs all day long, but when it comes to erasing or rewriting +RW discs, it chokes and gives us a "SCSI Target Error" message.

No one is really sure what the problem is, but it happens with more than one software package, so the popular opinion is that this is a firmware issue.

I just tried the Sony discs. Multiple erasures was fine.

I had the PX-504A the week it came out but sold it for a DRU-500AX once I found out it was a NEC. I'll wait for Plextor to actually make a DVDR drive before going in on it again.
