In House Review - LG GSA-4082B Super-Multi DVD±RW/RAM

Postby Ian on Tue Apr 27, 2004 10:45 am

CDRLabs has taken a look LG's newest "Super-Multi" drive, the GSA-4082B. With this drive, LG has taken the concept of the multi format DVD writer one step further by giving it support for all major DVD formats, including DVD-RAM. The GSA-4082B also features specs like 8x DVD±R and 4x DVD±RW writing speeds and has a maximum DVD read speed of 12x. On top of that, it can read and write to DVD-RAM media at 3x, the fastest speed currently available.

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on the GSA-4082B and see how it compares to some of the 8x DVD±RW drives from the competition. Does LG's new "Super-Multi" drive have what it takes? Is it the fastest DVD writer around? You'll have to read the review to find out.

While there are other reviews of the GSA-4082B out there, very few of them tested its performance with 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW media. Hopefully our review will give you a good idea of what to expect from LG's new "Super-Multi" drive. If you have any comments or questions about this review or the GSA-4082B, please post them in the forum using the link provided below.

Ian,
there seems to be a problem with the review- the conclusion is missing and the "Performance" section is duplicated there.

If I were an owner of the 4081 or an owner of the 4082 with the 4012 about to be released, I would be quite upset with LG. These three drives are seemingly identical, short of a firmware release. Hopfully the former models can be firmware upgraded to the later ones, although I highly doubt it.

I'm surprised by the lack of hacks for LG's drives. Especially considering how affordable they are. From what I have heard, the 4012 should be getting a speed boost for both CD reading and writing speeds. If I remember right, it will be 40/24/40 with 40x DAE speeds.

It's coming. 12x and dual layer. Some of my friends are getting sample drives and media.

Well I should not be too upset since the only reason I purchased that drive was for DVD-RAM capabilities which compliments my Panasonic DMR-E80 and E100 recorders nicely!

From what I have read, it is still at 3x for DVD-RAM but LG is suppose to release 5x DVD-RAM speeds sometime this year.

Yeah, from what I can gather, their 16x drive will get 5x DVD-RAM. Of course, we'll have to wait until they officially announce it.

OK, got more info on their 12x. This thing sounds pretty badass. As I said before, ithas 40/24/40 CD writing speeds and 40x DAE. It also has 12x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R and 5x DVD-RAM and can write to DL DVD+R. According to LG it will also write to 8x media at 12x.

Sweeta! That's exactly what I expected, only I didn't know they were going for dual layer already... nice. Too bad it's not gonna be our around the same time as the liteon 832s... then I'd buy it immediatly!

Well, once again, it looks like I will be upgrading since DVD-RAM was the main reason I purchased the 4082B and I thought 3x was pretty fast :P

Thanks Ian for the up-to-date info!

I keep holding off purchasing an LG DVD writer, because I keep finding out about the next model.

Now, the only question is do I get this one, or wait another month or two for the 12x12 version....

All I really want is the 5x DVD-RAM though :D

I agree dolphinius_rex. I thought the 4082B would be good for awhile with 3x DVD-RAM :x

Move over Plextor, here comes LG :P
