Has my Pioneer 106S given up on life??

Postby timwright2000 on Thu Dec 26, 2002 1:27 pm

Dear all,

I've had my 106S for a year, and I was happy with it, until I played a DivX avi movie which had been put onto a CDR disc. It played quite happily.
However, not long after it stopped reading discs altogether. Whenever I tried putting a disc in, beit DVD or CD, it has three attempts at reading it and then just spits it back out again.

The most annoying part of it however was today when I fired it up again (I've been using a 24X CD drive since) and it worked to start with. It played a DVD, read a data CD, life was good. Then, after about half an hour, it just stopped, and repeatedly tried to read the disc again without success. I ejected the disc, put it back in, and we're back to square one. It tries to read the disc three times and spits the disc back out.

Has my drive gone to pioneer heaven??

It's possible that the drive may still be sound but could be in need of a cleaning. If the laser is blocked by dust or crud, etc., this could cause the symptoms you are describing.

If the drive is out of warranty, it's not worth having it repaired. You could try cleaning it using the instructions for cleaning burners at:
