EasyWrite Reader and Win 98

Postby kaikow on Wed Aug 13, 2003 10:53 pm

Some of you have seen my moaning and groaning about not being able to get EasyWrite Reader (EWR) working in Win 98.

Thanx to the forum poster Inertia, I was able to try some older versions of Nero and InCD.

It appears that it matters not what version of Nero 5.* and IncD that I use, I still cannot get EWR to install in Win 98.

When the system reboots after the install in Win 98, the boot restarts and I end up in Safe Mode. After trying several combinations of Nero 5 and InCD, I finally relented and continued the boot with Step by Step Confirmation to try to determine the process was failing.

Was I ever surprised to find that the problem ocurrs when the msmouse.vxd driver is being loaded! Why would that driver conflict with EWR?

Note that this is a multiboot Win 98 and Win 2000 system.
No problem installing EWR with either Nero 5 or Nero 6 in Win 2000 SP 4.

Win 98 has all critical updates as of a few daze ago.

Here's the relevant info.

Note: The following is long.

For openers I would point out that DMA is not enabled for your Plextor PX-W4824A burner. This will cause performance problems and high CPU utilization. DMA should always be enabled for this drive.

The Iomega Zip 100 drive is frequently a suspect in conflicts, as shown for example in Error Message: Fatal Exception 0E in VxD IOS (04). As a troubleshooting step, it is worth uninstalling (including physically removing the cables from) the Zip drive to see if problems are affected.

Most recent CD burning programs don't conflict with each other (packet writing programs excluded), but there still may be leftover or rogue drivers which could cause conflicts. You could review and compare your drivers with the Nero provided list of drivers of other CD burner programs to see if any potential problems are present. Renaming suspected drivers as a troubleshooting tool is useful to see if improvements result.

The Msmouse.vxd driver on my Win98SE system is v4.10.1998, 15,809 bytes, dated 4/23/99. You could try replacing the driver, but if this problem doesn't occur unless EWR is installed there must some interaction causing the conflict.

Since you have already identified a loading conflict with Msmouse.vxd with EWR installed, you may have seen or used How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98. If not, there may be some useful troubleshooting tips to review.

Thanx, I guess I'm keeping you busy and out of trouble.

DMA won't stick when I boot to Win 98, no problem in Win 2000.

I have not upgraded the IOMEGA software in quite a while. I must have intended to do so, as I on 18 July 2003, I did download IomegaWare 4.0.2.
Guess I'll install that if changing msmouse.vxd does not do the trick.

I need to learn how to find things at the Ahead web site.

I previously had Roxio EZCD and DirectCD and SimpliCD installed in Win 98, but I do not see any of the listed Adaptec drivers.

I used to have version 4.10.1998, but I now have version 11.20.110 dated 7 December 1999.

I wonder if that was installed by the critical updates I installed in the past few weeks.

I try restoring the original msmouse.vxd.

I'm familiar with that article, but I'm not willing to go that far just to get EWR to work.

Uncle!

I found a way to resolve the problems I was having installing Nero, etc. in Win 98.

I got rid of Win 98 by installing Win 2000 OVER Win 98.
Not easy to do, since Win 2000 will not upgrade Win 98 on a system that is already multiboot. I had to get clever and fool Win 2000's installer by:

1. Changing boot.in to refere to only Win 98.
2. Unplugging the drive that has Win 2000 on F and Win 2000 on G.

So now I have a pretty vanilla Win 2000 on which I can try installing Nero, etc.

First, I want to get rid of some the deadwood left behind from Win 98, some of which requires program re-install.

Then I'll try installing Nero, etc. BEFORE I install Win 2000 SP 4, tho I may need tyo update directX to do so.
