I've seen a few dual format drives with 8x DVD+R writing capabilites. I was wondering if manufacturers will start producing drives that can burn 8x DVD-R, or is that technologically impossible?

Yeah, 8x DVD-R is coming soon. Supposedly, Lite-On's 8x DVD writer will suppor it with a firmware update. The new NEC and Pioneer drives will as well. Both are supposed to ship this month or next.
