DVD-Rom doesn't detect the DVD

Postby Big_H on Mon Mar 24, 2003 1:52 am

I've been having this problem for a while now, my DVD-Rom will not detect my DVDs.

When I had it in my old system, it worked OK, sometimes it would detect and sometimes it wouldn't. Then I built my new system, and now it's even more picky. Of all the movies I've tried (about 20), I've been able to get 2 to work (both of which are movies I hate :x ). It reads CDs fine.

As far as I can tell (without actually taking it out) it's a Pioneer DVD-115.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Would updating the firmware help?

Thanks.

Are these original or copied DVD's

If they are original theres loads of reasons for DVDs not playing properly.
Region coding on the drive may be locked and the DVD's your trying to play are set to a different region to that of the drive, some DVDs are region free and maybe the reason you can play them, hense the crap films

it may be that the drive is faulty if its a slot drive as appose to a try the internal spindle may not be picking the discs up but this is unlikly if cd's play ok

if they are copied or "personal versions" of films, camcorders etc the colour of the discs can play a problem. i have a pioneer slot 105 i think which i brought region free, but certain discs wont play, usually the blue backed DVD's even though the purple ones play fine. again with copies theres the plus and minus issue (+R -R)

most DVDs once burnt play in a regular DVD rom but i have a friend that cant play a copied -R disc in his drive, this again could be the reason.

try changing the software also that you use to play a DVD with or try taking autoplay of the drive. Best way is to eliminate each aspect logically to you find the reasoon for the failure, it may be simple to fix then again may just be a dodgy lazer on the drive.

Hope this helps a little!

Read and follow! It helped me fix my messed-up DVD-105SZ, which was having pretty much the same problem. Dave (DHC014), if you're listening, thanks again!

They're all original DVDs, the region of the drive is 1, the DVDs are the same.

I've tried PowerDVD, VLC, and WinDVD. As far as I know, the software shouldn't make a diffrence, because XP dosen't even see the DVD (I just get a message "Please Insert Disk").

Messing with the laser calibration without proper equipment or instructions should be an absolute last resort effort.

A dirty laser lens and/or guide rails are the most common cause of reading problems. I would strongly recommend that you try this first before fooling around with internal laser calibration adjustments.

Two good recorder cleaning instructions that are generally applicable can be found at:
