DVD-Rs: Made in Japan the best???

Postby ricrat on Fri Aug 15, 2003 12:02 pm

Hi:
I was shopping BestBuy (a mistake) and the salesperson told me to only get DVD-Rs made in Japan--but he didn't have any! Most were made in
Tawain--is that good?
I purchased a Panasonic E80H and find it to be pretty good. I'm looking at
HPs line of desktops (that feature DVD+Rs) for $750+. Should I go this
route or get a clone?
Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure that Taiyo Yuden is the only manufacturer of blank CD/DVD media in Japan. So yes, it would be excellent quality :)

Made in Tawain can mean several different makers, some good some bad. I'd suggest getting the Fuji 10 pack of 4X DVD-Rs (Taiyo Yuden) or the 50 pack spindle of 2X (Ritek).

Thanks that's a great help. I'm trying to figure out the best media. I've only had this unit a little over a week.

Ritek G04 4X -R hands down.

The whole Made in Japan theory is bunk based on my experience.

Haven't been real impressed with TY DVD Media. It's also ridiculously expensive.

Hitachi and Mitsubishi also make CD/DVD media.

TY 4x DVD+R/DVD-R are best for the money I think. Mitsubishi and Hitachi are too expensive.

Are Fuji DVD-R and DVD+Rs made by TY or are they made by another manufacturer?

Just curious since I haven't seen "Made in Japan" DVD-R or +R media in B&M retail outlets.

Edit: Found the following thread which answered my question.

Hi:
Thanks for everyone's input (it's a great help.
Now I need to know if anyone's used "MBI" DVD-R discs. They're made in
India and the source says he's had no failures. What's your experience?
Thanks again.
