4x DVD-R Burning

Postby ToneTrainer on Thu Jan 23, 2003 7:32 pm

Hi All

I have been playin around with my Pioneer A05.

I upgraded the f/w to 1.21 and purchased some new infiniti 4x DVD-R media along with Ritek DVD-RW media (only rec's at 1x :( "

In order to burn successfully at 4x what considerations should I give towards getting a stable 4x burn?

For eg

I have P4 1.7GHz 512 MB RDRAM
RAID 0 and single 40GB 7200RPM disk (all IBM GXP) for image burns.

WOuld you consider a defrag usefull? My Paging file is located on the 40gb disk, should I move that back to the raid 0 to increase it's read performance when burning new DVD-R's at 4x???

Thanks and regards

Tony

I'm not sure where you are located, I am located in the US in the Pacific NorthWest. My A05 would not upgrade to 1.21 the utility said it had 1.00 and that was the latest firmware for my drive. There may be different versions on drives in different locations is what I have been told.

Anyway, my A05 burns Ritek 4X perfectly. But that is about all I have had any success with. Most other media either burns coasters or does not work at all.

I would not think that any of the things you mentioned would have any effect on how fast the drive burns. I think that would be determined by the drive and the media.

Hope this helps...........

Thanks for the tips!

I live in the UK so there may be a difference in the latest drives.

I have now written several DVD-R disks at 4x using the infiniti disks, which are excellent but at over £2.10 per disk is expensive!

What DVD-RW disks can you suggest to use for 2x use? I have a cake of Ritek and they will not RW at more then 1x!

Thanks again

I have not been able to get anything but Ritek 4X discs to work with my A05. All the rest I have tried (Memorex, Maxell, TDk, etc) have been rejected by the drive or they made coasters. I was able to get some 1X burns with some Princo blue colored -R/W media. But that was the limit of my success. Fortunately I also have the Sony DRU-500A which seems to burn anything but nothing at 4X! :(
So I seem to have both extremes. Hopefully this will all wash out in later months with different media and firmware.

I have both drives too now.
Debating whether to upgrade the Pioneer fw to 1.21 (from 1.0).

I also need to buy new media soon:

I have narrowed it down to:
1) 100 2X for $78 + shipping, which will burn at 2X with both my DRU-500A and A05
OR
2) 50 2X for $42.50 + shipping, in case 4X medai comes down in price relatively soon
OR
3) 25 2X for $23.75 + shipping (probably not worth it due to shipping being about as much as for 50 discs...) ij case 4X media drops soon...
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW
TEAC CD-W540E 40X CD-RW

How soon to what level? :D

I did not hesitate to choose cheap DVD-R media. I with other forum people in South Korea bought together some thousands of the media at a much discounted price. I have met the reseller guy many times since 1999 and talked to him a few times recently for the joint volume purchasing (very common and popular here for ten years.)

Rima has DVD-R for as low as $0.55 now. Cheapest 4x DVD-R yet at least 3x more expensive than that.

Only Ritek ships 4x DVD-R in volume for under $2 per unit. The demand is so strong that the shipping to South Korea will begin from a few weeks later.

Princo will probably offer $0.9 4x DVD-R soon though but it will take at least a few weeks for the retail shops to adjust the price to under $1.5.

Wait for Ritek and Princo to ship 2x DVD-RW media.

Honestly, 2.4x DVD+RW media have been on the market for 15 months and the lowest price is $1.95 now in the US and less than that in Taiwan. DVD+RW seems to be a lot better than DVD-RW even at the same rated speed.
