I have tried to install a new Cyberdrive 48/16/48 in an old IBM Aptiva (1998 model#: 2153-E4N). Windows 98 detects the device but it will only play music discs. Attempt to read other disc results in system lock-up. I have checked the physical installation (cables, wires, etc.) and have installed it as master (and only device) on the secondary channel and slave on the primary channel (HDD is master on the primary channel). The BIOS is the latest version for this machine as checked against IBM website. I had installed the Nero 5.5 software that came with it and, thinking the problem might be a software conflict, I searched for similar programs but found none. I uninstalled Nero and InCD anyway. I then thought the problem must be with the ASPI drivers. The original drivers were version 4.0. I downloaded and installed Adeptec version 4.6 and version 4.71 from Force ASPI but still can't get it to work. This system uses the ALi Aladin V chipset (M1542-A1, M1543-A1). Any ideas?
I know this burner sounds like overkill for this system, and it is. It will be installed in a new system next year. The specs show that it should work in this system for now.
