basic question regarding region coding

Postby UALOneKPlus on Fri Feb 28, 2003 3:49 pm

Ok, I had installed a 16x DVD-Rom on my PC a few weeks ago. I just found out about rpc1.org, and the region free firmware.

Under what circumstances would you want to flash your DVD-Rom, and what are the basic steps and considerations?

Thanks.

The only reason why you want region free is if you watch DVD's from other countries. For example, if you like Japanese Anime or Martial Arts movies from Asia, sometimes they are only produced for Japan and etc, so you would need the region free firmware. The only other country with the same DVD region as the USA is Canada and Mexica I think.

As for the installation, it should be really easy. It's very similar to flashing your CD-RW drive with new firmware. Sometimes you even get lucky and find a region free firmware that comes with a windows installer, like how my region free firmware for my Pioneer DVD was. Just look around the net and if you still need help flashing your DVD, just ask one of us.

Note that making the drive region free is only half of the story. You also need to make your system regrion free as well. Two popular freeware solutions are DVD Region Killer and DVD Genie.

Here's a full list of the region codes and some additional information: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.10

I'm not exactly sure. It was a Hi-val packaged DVD-Rom, and it was labeled at a 16x DVD 40x CD, but it turned out to be a 48x CD reader as well. I'm too lazy to pull open the case right now, but may do so later.

Thanks BuddhaTB & cfitz for the info!! :D

Hey guys, I upgraded my ME to XP, and when I check on the properties of my DVD Rom drive, it says there's only 2 Region code changes left, even though I never changed the region.

Does every install / upgrade change the region codes left on a DVD Rom?

Also, how do I tell what kind of DVD-Rom is in my PC? The drive itself doesn't have any distinctive features, and Nero InfoTool just tells me it's an ATAPI 16X DVD-Rom...

Firmware is 150G.

Thanks...
