CD-R Backup software with additional Error Correction Data ?

Postby Halc on Sun May 30, 2004 9:51 am

Does anybody know of a CD-R backup software that calculates additional error correction data for the contents?

The software should be able to still record the disc in standard ISO or UDF format AND the results should be readable without the software itself.

However, when uncorrectable (as per Yellow Book / Orange Book error correction) errors do occur, one could read the disc contents using the additional ECD, using the backup software.

I know this kind of backup software must exits, but I cand seem to find it.

Anyone?

Nothing so far.

I'm mad at myself for not remembering where I saw this.

I'm not smart enough to have come up with this idea myself, I saw it on the web :)

Now I've spent countless of hours searching on various engines with multiple keywords and nothing.

Arghghh... I ... must... find..... it...

Halc,

i don't know if you've heard of this, but check it out:
ByteGuardian.
http://www.macecraft.com/byteguardian/

form macecraft (formerly jv16) - makers of jv16 powertools.

i can't be bothered to read all the details now, but you should look into this, maybe contact them for more info.

Thanks!

I fired away some questions to Macecraft (authors).

Based on their documentation ByteGuardian looks purely an ECD calculation and ECC using utility.

It's not a backup program per se. It has no idea how to extract partly unreadable files of a cd-r/dvd-r disc, but assumes that these kind of "broken" files are somehow available and fully accessible on the HD along with the intact ECD data.

It solves half the equation so to speak.

I'll report back when I hear more from them.
