but my OS is on the same channel as the DVD-ROM drive, so I don't think I should uninstall the primary IDE controller.
i had originally put that warning into the FAQ because it seemed to me that to uninstall the IDE channel of the OS hard drive
could be asking for trouble (i don't know in certainty). however i've had indications before (on another thread) that it
might be OK.

can you please confirm that you have tried uninstalling the IDE channel on which the OS hard drive (usually Primary) and then let XP re-detect the IDE channel, and it works OK?
did you have to reboot, or did windows redetect and reinstall the IDE channel without a reboot (as it does when removing the other channel) ?
if it works fine, i can remove the warning in the FAQ.
