Anyone know anything about Nu-Tech drives?

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

You're right. It's only 4x. I got it confused with another drive I'm reviewing.

You can check this thread out obout Nu tech. Personally I would use a Lite-on CD-RW to do games..just to save wear and tear on the DVD burner.

Hrmmmm. 4X rip speed has made me somewhat sour.

Is there potential for this 4X rip speed cap to be circumvented....or is this the hardware's PHYSICAL limitation? Ie, they havent capped it on purpose?

the above thread I posted the guy said this:

I also ripped several dvds with the drive
Daul layer pressed had a maximum read rate of 2.8x and average read rate of 2.3x
Single layered pressed and single layered burnt had a maximum read rate of 12.8x and average read rate of 8.7x.

Anydvd has some kind of option for o/c read speed I think.

The drive has a maximum read speed of 4x with both dual and single layer discs. I doubt he's reading videos at 12x.

Mmmmk...understood....but my question remains unanswered....

Is this 4X ripping:

a) Firmware enforced
b) A physical limitation of the chipset/laserblock

....I need technical detail. Phillips/QSI are good with things like this but I am quite sure they will not give THIS much away.

Might have to talk to some of the ladz over @ firmware-flash.com ?

Well.. the drive can read recordable DVD's at 8x.. so I'm guessing its something in the firmware.

I'm ripping with an old Light-on 163 and it rips around 7-8x on dual layered. My 8x burner should be here from Zipzoomfly Monday, so I'll let the burning commence. I got 2 packs of DVD+R's from Office Depot (that verbatim special) but I can't tell what type of media it is on my old light on yet.

I was just looking over the Nu Tech site and noticed this software compatibility list:

http://www.nu-global.com/1_english/2_new/01_01_news.php?nID=0&pID=32

The interesting this is that near the bottom, they list the DDW-082. Based on the read/write specs listed, it is a dual format DVD burner. No product details listed on the site, however.

It shows that this a dual format drive. BTW the 081 is back at 139 at zipzoomfly
