Advice for burning an error free DVD? (Data)

Postby Jon_J on Wed Sep 17, 2003 8:43 pm

I just burned my first DVD-R
I have been trying to get my DVD-ROM readers to read DVD-RWs I burned, (with no success).

I have a Plextor PX-708A firmware 1.01
My Readers are
Toshiba SD-M1402 firmwares 1012, 1810, and XY14
Toshiba SD-M1202 firmware 1028

I used Nero 6.0.0.11 and made a UDF/ISO Joliet compilation
It is one subdirectory with 1292 files.
(All these files are different, none are the same as any other).

I tried this compilation using a DVD-R
These are Memorex - Manufacturer...ProDiscG02
The burn completed successfully. But when I tried the "Verify" option in Nero, it seemed to hang at 85%, but finished eventually.

It gave me this error msg: Data verification failed
So I saved the log and the most obvious words in the log are:
Status summary
Total files=1292, identical=1111, different=1, inaccessible=180, skipped=0.

So then I loaded this DVD-R into my Tosh 1402 and it appears to be able to read this disc. Windows Explorer shows the volume name and all the files just as they are on my HDD from which I burned them.

I then used CD\DVD Diagnostic and performed the readability test, and the quick test showed the disc as "bad" with 91% soft errors, 5% hard errors.

Then I tried my last option to test this disc, (very long, time consuming test).
I opened the folder on the DVD-R using my Toshiba 1402, and started copying these 1292 files back to my hard drive.
To make it easier, I only selected 150 files at a time.
I got to about 400 files, 809MB, when I just plain gave up.
there are at least 4 or 5 of these files that windows says, "cannot be read by specified device".
Now I know this disc isn't exactly a coaster, but I know I probably cannot copy at least 100 or more of these files.

I'm trying to put 11,500 files, (61 CDRs), onto 7 or 8 DVDRs
How can I get a reliable burn with this data compilation.
The 11,500 files have been tested several times each, over the course of 5 years.
I know the files are good, I just want to make them more portable.

((Edit)) update - I put this disc back into my Plextor burner and tried copying 3 of these "bad" files and 2 of 3 copyed correctly
Thanks for reading this,
Jon

Try a lower recording speed I suppose? I've found that some recordable DVDs like to be cool (temperature-wise) when reading or writing... try taking the side of the computer case off?

myckee, I do have +R discs, but wanted to use -R for compatability to older readers.

Phoenix '97 I'll try my next DVD-R at 1X and see if it will produce better results.

I just burned a DVD+R FujiFilm RICOHJPNR00 and copyed all the files back to my HDD to test if they would copy. (They did) :-)

I have a new question now.
Where can I find a CRC checking program that I can use to check all these files at once?
They are Zip archives, and WinZip allows you to check each file individually, but that would take forever to check 1292 files!

Thank you for your replys,
Jon

Thank You, cfitz
The CDCheck program works very well.
I used the "compare" option, (I still have the archives on my HDD).

Now I have more confidence in these DVDs

Phoenix '97, I used 1X recording speed with a Memorex DVD-R and It resulted in a "good" burn. I'll have to try some better media next time I buy DVD-Rs. 1X takes a hour.

CDCheck does MD5 hash too.
Supported hashes: MD2, MD4, MD5, CRC-32, Adler32, Gost, Haval (128,160,192, 224, 256), SHA (1, 256, 384, 512), Tiger (128, 160, 192), RipeMD (128, 160).

you need the beta version.

Guys, I have been using CDCheck for sometime with my CDRs. Now that I have started copying DVDs, I'm planning to continue it. Btw, if CDCheck says after comparing all the files in the media are ok, should I be concerned about PI/PO values?
Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love,
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such liberty. - Richard Lovelace

yes, you should.
same with CDs.

if CDCheck comparison is OK that just means that it can read the data off the CD successfully (and it matches the data on the harddrive).

however that says nothing about the quality of the burn, number of C1/C2 errors or PI/PO errors.
