708A burns rings on -r's

Hello all,

I have a 708a firmware 1.03 and have used on nero version 551042, and 551054. The reg cleans were done in between each install. Well the problem is when I burn to minus -r's an -rw's it burns a ring about 3 centimeters from the center hole and it stops with an error. This problem reoccurs with both version of nero and it's happend on firmare 1.02. This happens with ritek G3's 2.4x, and memorex -rw. I've wasted 3 -r's so far so i don't want waste anymore. Btw I've burnt over 50 plus +r's on RicohJPN's @ 8X already with only a minor amt of coasters. Shall I RMA?

Sounds like you have a lemon. I have burned 16 DVD-R's (exactly) and have never had a problem.

G3 at 2.4x ? Shouldn't it be 2x.
Plextor is quite badly optimised for RITEK media.
Also there is some very poor G03 media floating arround.
I would see if it works fine with Maxell or MCC or Pioneer (not Piodata which is leaddata and has nothing to do with Pioneer) dvd-r media befor returning it.

woops, I meant 2x G3's. The thing is the riteks are on that compatability list.

I have a 50 pk spindle of Imation and 50 G3's, sitting here collecting dust. What minus burner shall i get?
nec 1300 ~ 100$
Pioneer 106 ~ 133$
liteon 811s ~ 150$ ?

You could first try a swap for the plextor it is picky for -r. With good media it writes excellent but with poor media it most time even refuses to start.

Now from these drives posted you have 2 options.

Lite On 811S - Which will support 8x -R in the future. Quality is okay media support is okay
Pioneer a06 - Quality is excellent, Media support is excellent but it's only 4x.

if i get the DVR-106D would i be able to upgrade with the same firmware as the DVR-A06 or do they use the same firmware?

THe difference between the Pioneer 106D and the DVR-A06 are

DVR-A06 comes with
-Nice box
-Blank media
-Software
-Cable
-Screws

The 106D is just the drive

Now the hardware isn't any different for the drives. So you don't have to upgrade the firmware it allready is the same.
My Pioneer 106D came with 1.07 which is allready the latest at this time.

Then 106D is what i'm leanin' towards. the 811s would also be nice but i'm just fed up with dealin' with all this nonsense that the plextor has been givin' me with shady media recognition. But i'm gonna miss burnin' 8 minute DVD's! Does nebody know how long the newegg RMA process takes?

If you could wait a few weeks (probally 3) the Pioneer a07 will be there.
8x Full for both formats and Pioneer quality.

that would be cool, but the reason that I went for the A06 was for the stability, and high media compatability. I was a guinea pig with the plextor. Even though plextor , with reputable brand recognition, can still churn out something shady and problematic. Look at all the lead in n out erros along with the end of disc session beefs that people have been gettin'. I for one, I have not gotten' any of these errors, but mine just burns rings all the time on -r's

I heard the A06 was VERY bad when it was first released. Now it is a good drive though. I wouldn't recomend the A07, as the rumored prices are anywhere between $300-$400.

wanna know how many dvd-r's ive burned, about 250 roughly

most were with pioneer 106 and plextor 708a, which i own now

I have a plextor 708a and the memorex dvd media sucks. I returned memorex dvd media and got a full refund at COMPUSA. I've been using the cheap COMPUSA DVD-R which is PRINCO discs and they work fine on my standalone dvd players as well as on my friends players too. It can be burned 2x speed although it is listed as 1x speed. What other programs are you using besides NERO? Are you using DVD SHRINK or DVD DECRYPTER? I've just started burning dvds and my opinion is it depends on what version of NERO you are using and other programs too. Plus the brand of media too. I've been using DVD SHRINK then use NERO burn version 5.5.10.42. I also use DVD DECRYPTER to burn. It could just be the media you are using and how you are converting and burning it. I also downloaded and installed the latest ASPI files from ADAPTEC'S SITE.

I also use IMG TOOL BURN to burn dvds. You can use DVD SHRINK then burn with IMG TOOL BURN.

I wouldn't RMA your PLEXTOR 708A yet. When I'm burning dvd's I shutdown any programs that are running in the background. Try other recommended dvd media that PLEXTOR recommends. I was very surprised that the cheap PRINCO DVD-R works and burns perfectly and plays in my standalone dvd players. I used IMATION (RICOH) DVD+R 4x that burned at 8x. Good Luck! I don't regret buying a PLEXTOR 708A.

i don't know why people say memorex sucks for the plex 708A i've burned 100 dvd+r's and any coasters were my fault or software. is it because the +r's wont work on your standalone? thats a different subject...

I've had problems with Memorex 4x DVD+R as well. If it works for you, then more power to you.

try to steer clear of princo disks, they were horrible in my sony and pioneer

for programs i use dvdshrink and nero 6.0.0.23

I don't have any problems using PRINCO DVD-R media with my Plextor 708A. I was quite surprised it was able to burn and play in my standalone dvd players. It's listed as only a 1x speed but it burns at 2x. PRINCO media is listed on PLEXTOR'S compatibilty media site.

Compared to the NEC 1300 the PLEXTOR 708A blows it away. I've read how the NEC has to have firmware upgrades in order to burn PRINCO media. It's a cheap burner but the reliabilty and quality of PLEXTOR is much better. That's just my opinion.

the DVR-106BK is the same as the 106D right? This is just the black bezel version with no difference right? The DVR-106BK is 129$ @ newegg, 5$ cheaper than it's beige sister the 106D @ 134$.

Actually, I recall reading on these very forums when the A06 came out that it was not a very good writer, don't get it, etc. etc.

Now the A06 is a very good writer. Some even call it the best DVD writer currently availible.
