Pioneer Japan sent out a press release today, announcing its new portable, slot-loading Blu-ray Disc writer, the BDR-XS07B-UHD. This USB Type-C equipped drive measures only 135 × 135 x 18 mm and weighs in at a mere 280g. The BDR-XS07B-UHD is capable of 6x BD-R, 6x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 6x. It also writes to triple- (100GB) and quad-layer (128GB) BD-R media at 4x and triple-layer (100GB) BD-RE media at 2x.

What makes the BDR-XS07B-UHD truly special is its ability to play back Ultra HD Blu-ray content. When installed in a Windows 10 PC with the included PowerDVD software and an i7 or i5 Kaby Lake processor, users can watch movies at 4K resolutions. The drive also ships with authoring software from CyberLink and is equipped with Pioneer's PureRead4+ technology, which greatly improves the reading performance of scratched and dirty discs. Both drives are equipped with a Serial ATA Revision 3.0 interface and are capable of 16x BD-R, 14x BD-R DL, 8x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 12x. The BDR-S12J-X And BDR-S12J-B also write to triple-layer (100GB) BD-R media at 8x, quad-layer (128GB) BD-R media at 6x and triple-layer (100GB) BD-RE media at 2x.

Pioneer Japan sent out a press release this morning, announcing two new commercial-grade Blu-ray Disc writers. Designed for the long-term preservation of electronic data, the BDR-PR1MC-W and BDR-PR1MA-W are certified by JIIMA (Japan Information Technology Association of Public Interest Corporation) and are capable of writing to BD-R, BD-R DL, BD-R TL (100GB) and BD-R QL (128GB) at 4x. The two drives are also compatible with Sony's long-term, 128GB BD-R media that will be available in late July.

The main difference between the two is that the BDR-PR1MA-W can be used to check the recording quality of a disc. Using Pioneer's Error Rate Utility, the drive is able to measure the RSER (Random Symbol Error Rate) as well as the number of burst and uncorrectable errors on recordable Blu-ray media. In addition, the BDR-PR1MA-W can be used to measure PIE/POF on DVDs and BLER/CU on CDs.

Taiwan recordable optical disc leading company, Ritek Co. announced today, it has become the current only one oversea Archive Disc professional production partner that outside Panasonic group. Such mass production of 300GB Archive Disc (AD) will be started in July. It has also become the first professional optical disc manufacturer in the world to have AD production lines and technologies, besides the two specification developers of AD. It is officially moving toward the highest field of B2B professional market, which commencing the production of large-capacity AD archive discs.

The Archive Disc is a new generation of optical discs jointly developed by Panasonic and Sony, and was designed for large-scale cloud databases. Panasonic and Sony have the most high-end optical disc and optical disc drive technology, invested huge technology development resources, have formulated "Archival Disc", a new standard for professional-use, next-generation optical discs. Both companies started co-development in July 2013 and completed a standard with recording capacity of 300GB per disc by the end of 2015, of which had constituted extraordinary contribution. At present, specification of 300GB has been developed and plan to develop up to 1TB in the future according to Press Release from both companies.

Data (cloud) centers require safe and secure data storage for decades. AD archive disc is write-once storage media, and can effectively prevent hackers from overwriting and forfeiting data. According to accelerated testing, the mean lifetime of Panasonic Archival Disc is estimated to be 100 years or more at temperatures of 30ºC and humidity of 70% RH. Compared to conventional media that have to migrate data periodically, long-life AD archive discs without data transfer costs. The special features can make the archiving operation Panasonic AD system at room temperature, it also significantly reduce the electricity cost of data center facilities for temperature control.
